VETERAN OF THE WEEK: Larry Ramon Montes Sr.



CSM Larry Ramon Montes Sr. entered the U.S. Army in February 1978 and complete basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri.

His assignments include: 237th Engineer Battalion, Heilbronn West Germany; 736th Transportation Co., El Monte, Calif.; 250th Transportation Co., El Monte, Calif.; 326th Finance Group, Bell, Calif.; 4 BDE 7/104, Pasadena, Calif.; HHC 63d Regional Readiness Command, Los Alamitos, Calif. 104th REGT, 7th BN, Bell, Calif; current assignment 145th MMB, Garden Grove, Calif.

CSM Montes deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He has held various leadership positions to include Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and Command Sergeant Major.

CSM Montes’ military schools include:  3rd Infantry Division NCO Academy, (PNOC), 64C Motor Transport Operator, US Army Reserve, Primary Leadership Development Course, US Army Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, NBC Defense, ANCOC, TATS First Sergeant Course, 805A-73C10 Finance Specialist, Postal Course, US Army Sergeant Major Academy, and Battle Staff.

Awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM), Southwest Asia Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Star, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (4th Award), Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, w/3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters (ARCAM), National Defense Service Medal, with Bronze Service Star Device (NDSM), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, with Bronze Hourglass, “M” Device, “2” Device (AFRAM), Army Service Ribbon, Service in Kuwait/Iraq, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Kuwait-Liberation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/3 Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Drivers and Mechanics Badge.

CSM Larry R. Montes Sr., is son to Louis Montes (deceased) and Mary Alaniz of Pico Rivera, CA, he is married to former Patricia Hernandez, of Pico Rivera, CA, he has four sons Larry Montes Jr., age 35, Steven Montes age 33, Nathaniel Montes age 32, and Matthew Montes age 28. He has two grandsons Steven Montes Jr., age 5 and Joshua Montes, age 1 year old, daughter in laws Kathy Montes and Alicia Montes.

CSM Montes’ favorite pastime is running and playing golf.
