VETERAN OF THE WEEK: Octavio Sanchez



Staff Sergeant Sanchez served in Charlie Company, First Battalion Fifth Marines and is a veteran of the war in Iraq. While deployed to Ramadi in June 2005, he was struck by an improvised explosive device and suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent of his face and body, losing the use of his left hand and having the right hand amputated. After returning home, SSgt Sanchez became a patient at UCLA’s Operation Mend. Operation Mend doctors were able to perform numerous procedures, including rebuilding his nose.  SSgt Sanchez a married father of five currently living in Fontana, California.  He is now retired and serves as an ambassador for Operation Mend, and an advocate for all veterans.
