VETERAN OF THE WEEK: Patrick A. Wilkinson



Enlisted in March 1985, graduating from Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, SC in June 1985. Attended Aviation Ordnance schools at Naval Air Station Memphis, TN and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma, AZ earning the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 6521, Aviation Ordnance Munitions Technician. 

Assigned to the Bombing Range, MCAS Yuma from December 1985 to October 1986. Transferred to Chemical Weapons Platoon, Marine Wing Weapons Unit (MWWU) -3. Reassigned to Nuclear Weapons Team (NWT) Delta, MWWU-3 in March 1987. Attached to MWWU-1, along with NWT Delta, from July 1987 to August 1990.

In September 1990, reported to Marine Security Guard School, Marine Security Guard (MSG) Battalion. Completed MSG School and reported to MSG Detachment Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) for duty as a watch stander and Squad Leader from December 1990 to January 1992. Reassigned to MSG Detachment Cape Town, South Africa for duty as watch stander and Assistant Detachment Commander from January 1992 to March 1993.

Upon completion of MSG Duty, transferred to Ordnance Division, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS)-39, Marine Aircraft Group (MAG)-39, Camp Pendleton for duty as the 20mm Guns Section Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (SNCOIC). In October 1995, reported to Recruiters School, MCRD San Diego.

Upon graduation from Recruiters School, assigned to Recruiting Station Harrisburg, PA, Recruiting Sub-Station (RSS) Bucks County as a canvassing recruiter.  After a year as a canvassing recruiter, assigned as the NCOIC for RSS West Chester.

Completed Recruiting Duty in January 1999 and returned to MALS-39, MAG-39 for duty as the Ordnance Division Production Control Chief.

Selected to the rank of First Sergeant and reported to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marines (5/11) in October 2001. Deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 1 with 5/11 and OIF 2 with Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marines (1/4). Reassigned to Headquarters Battery, 5/11 from April 2005 to February 2006.

On 28 March 2006, reported to the Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines (2/3), Marine Corps Base Hawaii to be posted as Battalion Sergeant Major.  Deployed to OIF 6 and OIF 8 while serving as the 2/3 Sergeant Major.

SgtMaj Wilkinson’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon. SgtMaj Wilkinson is married to the former Jennifer Baragar.  They have three children, Allison, Meaghan and Ryan.
