Bailey Gives Back During Holiday Season

Posted Dec 23, 2014

There are so many words that define the spirit of the holiday season. Peace, love, joy, giving. But maybe none sum up the essence of this time of year better than hope. Stedman Bailey recognizes that when he gives his time, presents, or a meal to someone in need, he’s really giving the gift of hope.

“The holiday season is a chance to be able to give back to people who may not have much. They may not come from much,” said the second-year wide receiver Bailey. “It’s about the little things I can give people that can give them hope to continue to push through life.”

Last Friday, Bailey and teammates Jared Cook, Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin and Chris Givens provided some needed hope to residents of Ferguson and North St. Louis County, who have been impacted by the region’s civil unrest.  Each of the five players made personal contributions to purchase coats, gloves, hats, socks, underwear, non-perishable food items, detergent and personal hygiene items.  They then visited the Urban League in Jennings to distribute the items.

“It was a tremendous gesture by our players who really wanted to find a meaningful way to show tangible support to some of the members of our community who are dealing with the aftermath of the civil unrest that has plagued our region,” said Molly Higgins, Rams’ vice president of corporate communications & civic affairs. “Maybe most impressive is the fact that it was a player-driven initiative and something they came up with on their own and then Nicole (Woodie, Rams’ community outreach & player involvement manager) helped design and execute.  We are incredibly proud of the guys’ desire to make a difference not only through their financial investments, but the time they spent lifting their spirits of our fellow St. Louisans who have been through so much.”

Another example of the tangible impact Bailey has had on the lives of St Louis residents is the Thanksgiving turkey giveaway at the Urban League that he has participated in each of his two years in the league.

“Giving out the turkeys, I just thought about how without us being able to give these people turkeys and other food, I don’t think many of them would have had a Thanksgiving or have anything to eat,” said Bailey. “That was big. And with kids, they always run up to us and say we are their heroes, so that always puts a smile on my face.”

That may be the best part of the holiday season. No matter whether you are on the giving or receiving side, the hope and joy go both ways.

“I love the holiday season. It always puts me in good spirits. To be able to put a smile on someone else’s face that may not have much, I don’t even have to receive gifts myself. Just doing things like that is a blessing in itself,” said Bailey.

Bailey has been able to give and receive plenty of blessings during this holiday season from the Thanksgiving turkey drive to a Neighborhood Houses Homecoming event with Benny Cunningham, to the Urban League holiday distribution event. His participation and enthusiasm for these events has earned him the community player of the week award.
