Community Player of the Week: Rob Turner

Posted Oct 2, 2012

The St. Louis Rams Community Player of the Week presented by Ameren Missouri is center Rob Turner. Ameren Missouri also recognizes Luke M. as the Powering Change Customer of the Week.

In an effort to strengthen their offensive line this season, the Rams signed Turner away from the New York Jets, figuring he could fill in effectively at a number of positions on the line. Four games into the 2012 season, Turner has been more than just a solid backup. He is a starter and one of the constants on an offensive line hit hard with injuries, yet has still managed to show marked improvement as a group.

Turner might be an unsung hero in the trenches on game day, but he is becoming recognizable for his work in the community. Earlier in the season, Turner took part in Hometown Huddle, a day of service in which the Rams worked with seven local United Way organizations. The program incorporated elements of the NFL’s PLAY 60 campaign, aimed at getting kids active for at least 60 minutes each day. Throughout the afternoon, Turner tossed touchdown passes to groups of kids as they made their way around stations promoting active and healthy lifestyles. When it was time for each group to rotate, Turner huddled the kids up and offered words of encouragement.

In addition, he also served as one of the celebrity servers during the 17th annual Celebrity Server Night of Wishes benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri. During the evening, Rams fans “tipped” their waiters in exchange for autographs and photos in an effort to raise money for Make-A-Wish. That effort, combined with a silent and live auction, helped Turner and the Rams raise over $225,000 for the organization. That total is enough to grant the wishes of close to 45 kids with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Turner played a key role in benefitting Make-A-Wish through the “tips” he earned, and his presence helped make the evening that much more meaningful to the Wish Kids in attendance.

Most recently, Turner joined some of his Rams teammates in helping to teach women the X’s and O’s of football during Football Academy. Formerly known as Football University, this program was an interactive event in which women took part in various drills, took a tour of the Rams’ locker room and received demonstrations in the weight room and training rooms from the respective coaching staffs. Before the ladies went around the facilities, they got a chance to hear from Head Coach Jeff Fisher and General Manager Les Snead, in addition to a few of the players – including Turner. Questions from the women ranged from tactical to personal, and Turner and his teammates took turns providing insight.

To top it all off, Turner donates 20 tickets for each Rams home game to Riverbend Family Ministries. He is one of 30 Rams players to take part in the Ticket Donation Program. Located in Wood River, Ill., Riverbend Family Ministries is a group of non-profit organizations who work together to address various aspects of individual, family and community needs. The organization fits in with some of Turner’s other charitable interests such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has been a member since his high school days and served as an officer for the organization.

Whether it is on the field or in the community, Turner has made a positive impact on St. Louis.

“Robert has emerged as someone who is always willing to lend a helping hand in our many community endeavors,” said Molly Higgins, vice president of corporate communications/civic affairs, St. Louis Rams.  “He’s been a great addition both on and off the field.”
