Johnson, Joyner Named to PFF Team of the Week

Posted Sep 12, 2017

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson and safety Lamarcus Joyner were named to Pro Football Focus' Team of the Week after Week 1.

The Rams' secondary had a dominant performance in Sunday's victory over the Colts, scoring 16 of the team's 46 points and holding Indianapolis to just one touchdown. Specifically, cornerback Trumaine Johnson and safety Lamarcus Joyner, were two of the most impressive players on field and their effort did not go unnoticed.

Every week the team at Pro Football Focus releases their choices for the NFL's offensive and defensive "Team of the Week," taking into account an exhaustive All-22 review process and play-by-play grading. This past week both Rams' defensive starters earned a well deserved spot on the list.

First up for Los Angeles is Johnson who scored the first touchdown of Sunday's game, picking off quarterback Scott Tolzien on his first pass of the day. Here is what PFF had to say about the Rams' captain, who earned an overall grade of 89.8.

"Elite Stat: Allowed a passer rating of just 16.7 when targeted against the Colts. Johnson scored a defensive touchdown on the first pass that Colts QB Scott Tolzein attempted, intercepting it and bringing it back for six. He was thrown at five times overall in the game, allowing just two receptions and 25 yards."

Lamarcus Joyner also recorded a pick-six in Sunday's game, the first of his career. Joyner's commanding performance earned him an overall grade of 93.1, the top overall grade for any player in Week 1.

"Elite Stat: Targeted four times, Joyner allowed just one catch for three yards. Joyner was targeted four times, and caught as many of those passes himself (one) as he allowed Colts receivers to bring in. He also broke up a pass, and when thrown at gave up a passer rating of exactly zero."
