Mailbag: What are Realistic Expectations for Whitworth?

Posted Jul 29, 2017

As the Rams open training camp on Saturday, we've got one final Mailbag question for this week on new Rams LT Andrew Whitworth.

At long last, Rams 2017 training camp begins today. And with that, we come to the end of our all-week Mailbag series. We hope to see you at UC Irvine for one of the Rams’ 15 open practice sessions, beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. Without further ado, let’s get to it.

Today’s question comes from William.

This is a question that may come up a few times over the course of the preseason, mainly because there are few things in life that are undefeated and one of them is father time.

However, Whitworth has been so consistent throughout his career that there’s plenty of reason to believe he can still perform at a high level. Upon signing with the Rams in March, he talked about how he’s continued to keep his body in shape in order to excel at left tackle.

“I do everything from CrossFit to Orange Theory to hiking and just I stay outside all day every day,” Whitworth said a few months ago. “I play a ton of golf. I just try to keep the body moving and I feel like I can be more athletic and more fluid the more I can keep myself moving, the more keep my body in great shape year-round.”

That approach has delivered results. It’s not everything, but Pro Football Focus ranked Whitworth as its No. 26 player for the 2016 season. That’s after the same outlet had ranked him at No. 39 the year before.

Digging a bit deeper into the PFF metrics, the outlet said he allowed 20 quarterback pressures in 2015 but then only 14 last season. So there’s an argument to be made that he’s still improving even as he gets older — and that’s saying nothing of his considerable run-blocking skill.

Of course, there will come a time when Whitworth’s age will catch up to him. But as of now, there’s good reason to believe he can still be the kind of quality left tackle that will help stabilize the Rams’ offensive line. And that, in turn, can significantly improve the offense as a whole.
