OLB Matt Longacre to be Placed on IR

HC Sean McVay said Tuesday that OLB Matt Longacre will be placed on injured reserve with a back injury. Longacre is third on the team with 5.5 sacks in 2017.

Outside linebacker Matt Longacre was inactive for Sunday’s game against the Titans with a back injury, and head coach Sean McVay said on Tuesday that Longacre will have to be placed on injured reserve.

In his third pro season out of Northwest Missouri State, Longacre had been quite productive in his rotational role this season. Longacre is third on the team with 5.5 sacks, behind only Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn.

But McVay revealed Tuesday that Longacre has been dealing with a back issue for most of the regular season — similarly to kicker Greg Zuerlein — that will now keep him out for the rest of the year. Longacre will have surgery to correct the issue.

“Can’t say enough about just the contributions that Matt has made for us,” McVay said. “You look at the production, you look at the way that he competes down-in and down-out, both from a run-game standpoint and just what he’s been able to provide as a rusher and his toughness, just what he’s worked through.

"You watch the way that he was trying to gut that out at the end, the way he’s walking around the locker room and he wants to do everything in his power to continue to compete — it’s almost one of those deals where you have to make the decision for him,” McVay continued. “But he’s such a tough competitor and unfortunate that we’re not going to have him because of what he’s meant for our team.”

With Longacre inactive on Sunday, outside linebacker Carlos Thompson played in the defensive rotation. Thompson was on the field for 12 snaps, making one tackle for loss in the 27-23 victory over the Titans.
