The Rams have acquired cornerback Aqib Talib from the Broncos in exchange for a 2018 fifth-round draft pick.

Talib, 32, has been one of the league’s premier cornerbacks for much of his career. He’s currently No. 4 on the active list with 34 interceptions and No. 4 all time with 10 interceptions returned for a touchdown. He began his career as the Buccaneers’ 20th overall pick in the 2008 draft, and spent four-and-a-half seasons with Tampa Bay before being traded to New England in early November 2012. After another season in New England, Talib signed with Denver as a free agent, where he’s spent the last four years.

There, the Cleveland native was a leader for the Broncos, as they became Super Bowl 50 Champions. Talib picked off three passes in 2015, returning two for six. He also had six passes defensed in Denver’s three postseason games that year.

Talib departs the Broncos as the franchise’s all-time leader with six interceptions returned for a touchdown, and a franchise record 103-yard interception return. He was also a first-team All-Pro for the club in 2016, and has been selected for the Pro Bowl in each of the last five seasons — one of which came when Talib played for the Patriots.

The move reunites Talib with Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who held the same position in Denver when the club won Super Bowl 50. Talib reportedly wanted to join the Rams in large part because of Phillips’ presence.

Talib joins a refreshed Los Angeles secondary, which now includes cornerback Marcus Peters — acquired via trade from Kansas City. Last week, L.A. signed former Packers cornerback Sam Shields, who missed much of the last two seasons due to injury. The club has also utilized its non-exclusive franchise tag on safety Lamarcus Joyner, and re-signed slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman to a three-year deal.
