The defense opened the 11-on-11 period strong as CB Cortland Finnegan picked off a long pass from QB Sam Bradford, originally intended for WR Chris Givens, in the end zone. The interception was a rare occurrence in a training camp where Bradford and Givens have consistently connected deep in the pass game.
The offensive line played well throughout the afternoon, opening several running lanes for RBs Daryl Richardson, Isaiah Pead, Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham.
QB Austin Davis also had a good day as he connected deep in 11-on-11 with WRs Brian Quick and Stedman Bailey on back-to-back plays. During the second team’s two-minute drill he found WR Emory Blake for a big catch to move the ball down the field on a drive that had stalled as a result of good coverage by the defense. Davis then found TE Mike McNeill in the end zone for the score to end the drive. McNeill took a big hit, but held on for the touchdown.
TE Lance Kendricks and LB Jabara Williams suited up with the team Wednesday, but participated in conditioning drills off to the side during practice. RT Rodger Saffold also practiced in full pads and joined the offense today in 11-on-11 against the defense.
“Rodger was much better,” Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. “It’s good to get him out, get him in pads, and get him going. We’ll continue to watch him with expectations that he should be able to play.”
As the team broke camp, practice ended with some fun for everyone as Coach Fisher orchestrated his annual ‘Dizzy Bat’ competition. Veterans oversaw the playful competition that featured Rams rookies and football operations interns. According to Fisher, it was Cunningham who stole the show.
“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” said Fisher. “It’s interesting that with a football in his hand, under normal circumstances, he’s got great balance.”
The Rams closed training camp with a 70 percent increase in attendance from last season’s camp. Up next, the Rams will travel to Sports Authority Field at Mile High to take on the Denver Broncos in their third preseason game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
