The St. Louis Rams have announced defensive tackle Doug Worthington as the team’s Community Player of the Week for week nine.

“It’s great to be recognized, but a lot of guys do community service here,” Worthington said. “When you have a group guys in the locker room who give back so much to the community, you have no other choice but to do the same.”

Worthington was joined by running back Benny Cunningham and wide receiver Bradley Marquez, Rams cheerleaders, staff members and team mascot Rampage at the 2015 Hometown Huddle, a PLAY 60 event at the O’Fallon Park YMCA in North St. Louis, in partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis.

The volunteers converted the recreational center’s gymnasium into a football playground, with inflatable kick and pass stations, a touchdown catch and dance station, obstacle course, tackling station and interactive station where kids tried on Rams gear such as pads and helmets. The 6-foot-5, 318 pound Worthington played defensive back at the touchdown catch and celebration station.

A week later, Worthington attended Oak Brook Elementary in the Parkway School District in honor of the organization’s “Holiday Mail for Heroes” campaign, in partnership with American Red Cross. Worthington visited more than 450 students to help decorate holiday cards to send to active and retired military personnel living domestically and abroad. With Worthington’s help, the school was able to complete more than 1,500 cards for servicemen and women.

“The Rams just gave me some possibilities for events, and I ran with it,” Worthington said. “The PLAY 60 with the kids was phenomenal and then doing those cards for the veterans and seeing how much the kids love it. Anything with kids is exciting.”

In addition to his charitable outreach this week, Worthington has dedicated his time to events such as the Lady Rams Fashion Show and is an active part of the defensive line’s Sack Homelessness campaign. Each time a Ram records a sack, the player and defensive line coach donate $1,000 to St. Patrick Center in St. Louis.
