Countdown to Camp is a series breaking down the Rams roster by position group heading into training camp. The first installment examines the quarterbacks.

There is no inherent advantage quite like having an experienced passer under center. To that end, the Rams are among the well-positioned at quarterback entering training camp with 17-year veteran Matthew Stafford leading the way.

In the NFC, Stafford is the oldest active quarterback. Projected Giants starter Russell Wilson is second, followed by Cowboys starter Dak Prescott and then Lions starter Jared Goff. While there are exceptions like the outstanding rookie season the Commanders' Jayden Daniels had leading Washington to the NFC Championship, success last season across the conference and the league largely favored veteran passers.

Meanwhile, the Rams kept that experience theme going re-signing veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year deal to return as Stafford's backup. Los Angeles' top two passers combine for the following:

  • 27 seasons' worth of experience (Stafford 16, Garoppolo 11)
  • 304 career games played (Stafford 222, Garoppolo 82)
  • 286 career starts (Stafford 222, Garoppolo 64)

Garoppolo completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards with two touchdowns against one interception in his lone appearance last season. Even as a backup, he enjoyed his first season with the Rams so much he wanted to remain in Los Angeles and in that role rather than explore starting opportunities elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Stetson Bennett enters Year 3 with a second consecutive full offseason to learn and develop.
