Notable Seahawks additions

  • Acquired wide receiver Rashid Shaheed in a trade with the Saints on Nov. 4: Shaheed's biggest impact so far has been on special teams – look no further than the opening kickoff he returned for a touchdown in last weekend's divisional round playoff game against the 49ers.
  • Hired Klint Kubiak as offensive coordinator on Jan. 26: Seattle finished the regular season eighth in total yards and third in scoring offense.

Top performers in divisional round

Quarterback Sam Darnold completed 12 of 17 pass attempts for 124 yards and one touchdown in the Seahawks' 41-6 win over the 49ers.

Running back Ken Walker III led Seattle's backfield with 19 carries for 116 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp paced the Seahawks' wide receivers with five receptions for 60 yards.

Linebacker Ernest Jones IV set the tone defensively with six total tackles, one interception and one forced fumble; that unit forced three fumbles overall and recovered two of them.

Shaheed returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to lead the way for special teams, while kicker Jason Myers made both of his field goal attempts and all five of his extra point attempts.

Early storylines to watch, and what they mean for the Rams

Much of the discussion around this game will likely focus on the No. 1 scoring offense versus the No. 1 scoring defense, and rightfully so with the talent on those sides of the ball. However, special teams should be part of that conversation, too.

After surrendering a 58-yard punt return to Shaheed that helped spark Seattle's fourth-quarter rally in Week 16, Los Angeles' special teams took its leadership in a new direction after McVay parted ways with special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn. Since then, McVay has been pleased with how that unit has looked overall under the guidance of interim special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and assistant Matt Harper.

Throughout this season, that third phase has swung games in different directions for each team, especially Seattle. And it could make a big difference on Sunday.
