Michael Hunter enters his first season with the Los Angeles Rams as the assistant defensive backs coach.
He joined the Rams after spending some time with the Tennessee Volunteers this offseason as the program's cornerbacks coach. Prior to his stint in Knoxsville, Hunter spent two seasons as the assistant defensive backs coach at Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes win a national championship in 2024. Hunter coached the cornerbacks at Ohio State during the 2025 season and helped the program advance to another College Football Playoff.
At Ohio State, Hunter worked with Denzel Burke and Jordan Hanock, who were both selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Prior to his stint in Columbus, Hunter spent one season as the passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach at Tulsa in 2023.
From 2021-22, he served as a defensive assistant at Oklahoma State. During his first season with the Cowboys, he helped lead the program to 12 wins and a win against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. The defense finished the season ranked second in the Big 12 in pass defense.
Before beginning his coaching career, Hunter spent time with six NFL teams including the New York Giants, New York Jets, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs from 2016-19. He was first signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
Hunter played collegiately at Indiana and then finished his college career at Oklahoma State in 2015. At Indiana, Hunter was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
A native of Monroe, La., Hunter earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science from Indiana in 2015 and received his master's degree in sport psychology in 2019.
Hunter and his wife, Elise, have a son, Michael III, and daughter, Emma.
