Robert Wright enters his first season with the Los Angeles Rams as a senior defensive assistant.

He spent the previous two seasons at Syracuse serving as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach after being part of head coach Fran Brown's inaugural staff in 2024. In 2025, freshman linebacker Antoine Deslauriers was named a Freshman All-American, a nominee for the Shaun Alexander Award, and was the first true freshman in program history to lead the team in tackles.

Wright was named a 35-under-35 winner for the American Football Coaches Association in 2024. In his first season at Syracuse, Wright helped lead the Orange to a 10-3 record and finish the season inside the top-20 of the final AP poll. Under Wright's guidance, starting linebackers Justin Barron and Marlowe Wax earned All-ACC honors before moving on to earn spots on NFL rosters.

Before his time at Syracuse, Wright spent the 2023 season as the Defensive Coordinator at Buffalo. In his one season with the Bulls, the defense ranked in the top-25 nationally in numerous defensive categories including passing defense (18th), defensive touchdowns (25th) and third down defense (23rd). The Buffalo defense also ranked in the top-10 nationally in total defense during conference play. Safety Devin Grant led the MAC in interceptions while linebacker Max Michel led the conference in forced fumbles. Wright also mentored linebackers Shaun Dolac and Joe Andreessen, who made NFL rosters. Dolac signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent leading up to the 2025 season.

Wright spent the 2022 season at Duke as a senior defensive analyst and worked closely with the linebackers. He helped guide the Blue Devils to their best season in nearly a decade, finishing with a 9-4 record with a victory over UCF in the Military Bowl. The 2022 Blue Devils finished fifth in the ACC in scoring defense (22.1 points per game) and ranked ninth nationally in takeaways (26). The unit also finished 22nd in the nation in sacks.

Prior to his stint in Durham, Wright spent the 2021 season at Iowa State as a special teams quality control coach, where he mentored kicker Andrew Mevis who was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. The Cyclones finished 7-6 that season and made an appearance in the Cheez-It Bowl.

Before Iowa State, he spent two seasons at Texas A&M as a graduate assistant where he worked with the linebackers. The Aggies posted a 17-6 record in his tenure at College Station, including three consecutive bowl victories over no.25 Oklahoma State (2019 Texas Bowl) and no.13 North Carolina (2020 Orange Bowl). The Aggies finished ninth nationally and led the SEC in total defense in 2020, surrendering just 317.3 yards per game. Their rushing defense was ranked second nationally (92.0).

Wright worked with seven defensive players that landed on NFL rosters, including Justin Madubuike, Bobby Brown III, Buddy Johnson, DeMarvin Leal, Michael Clemons, Antonio Johnson and Jaylon Jones.

Prior to his stint at College Station, he spent three seasons at Illinois serving in various roles. He joined the Illini staff as a defensive graduate (2016-17) before being elevated to the defensive quality control analyst in 2018. While in Champaign, Wright worked primarily with the linebackers.

Wright got his coaching start as a special teams quality control coach at his alma mater, the University of Miami. He spent the 2015 season mentoring punter Justin Vogel, who was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist that season. He also mentored Michael Badgley from a walk-on placekicker to an NFL career and is the leading scorer in Miami history (403 points). The Hurricanes finished that season with a 8-5 record, including an appearance in the Sun Bowl.

Before his coaching career began, Wright played for Miami during the 2011 season. He later earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 2015. He also obtained a Master's degree in sport administration from Illinois in 2017.
