Zak Kromer enters his 11th NFL season and 10th with the Los Angeles Rams. He currently serves as the assistant offensive line coach after spending two seasons as an offensive assistant.
Last season, the Rams offensive line finished first in penalties per game (5.56), sixth in sacks allowed (31), tied for sixth in quarterback sack rate (5.5%), tied for seventh in hurries allowed (132) and 11th in pressures allowed (191). The offensive line did not allow a sack in four consecutive weeks (Weeks 14-17), tied for the longest streak in franchise history and the first time they've accomplished the feat since 2013. OL Kevin Dotson led the charge on the line and allowed only 1.0 sack, four quarterback hits, five hurries and 10 pressures from Weeks 6-17.
Under Kromer's guidance in 2023, the Rams offensive line allowed the lowest sack total (22.0) since the 2020 season and propelled the run game signigicantly. The Rams offensive line also finished seventh in quarterback sack rate (5.5%) and pressures allowed (213).
Rookie OL Steve Avila had a stellar first season and led the team in offensive snaps played (1,094), which was the most snaps played for a Rams offensive lineman since 2021. Among rookie offensive linemen, Avila ranked second in offensive snaps played and was the only Rams player to play every offensive snap. He also finished fifth in sacks allowed (2.0).
Dotson finished with the second-best overall grade (85.2) and the best run blocking grade (88.8) among all guards, according to PFF. Additionally, veteran Alaric Jackson was tied for first in sacks allowed (1.0) among tackles who played over 500 offensive snaps.
In 2022, Kromer worked closely with the tight ends and helped Tyler Higbee sustain his productivity in McVay's offense. In Week 16 against the Broncos, Higbee eclipsed 3,000 career receiving yards and became the Rams' all-time leader in touchdowns for tight ends (20).
Higbee is currently the Rams' all-time leader in receptions (361), receiving yards (3,668) and touchdowns for tight ends (24). Under the guidance of Kromer, he tallied a career-best 72 catches for 620 yards and three touchdowns during the 2022 season. His 620 receiving yards were the second-most of his career. Additionally, his 404 yards after catch was a career-high, the fourth-best amongst tight ends, and the 28th-highest YAC total in the NFL that season.
During his first five seasons with the Rams from 2017-2021, Kromer primarily worked with an offensive line that anchored one of the most productive offenses in the NFL during that span.
In 2021 during the team's Super Bowl-winning season, the offensive line finished tied for sixth in sacks allowed (31), seventh in sack percentage (4.9%), fifth in pressures allowed (173) and third in pressures allowed per dropback (26.8%).
In his fourth season in L.A. in 2020, Kromer helped a rushing attack that finished 10th in the league, averaging 126.1 rush yards per game.
In 2019 with the help of Kromer's adjustments throughout the season due to injury along the offensive front, the offensive line did not allow a sack in a franchise-best six games, while also allowing the fewest sacks in the league (22).
Kromer spent the 2016 season with the Buffalo Bills as an entry-level coaching assistant. Prior to the Bills, he spent four seasons at the University of Oklahoma as a student assistant for the football program.
Kromer earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications.
He is the son of the longtime NFL offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who has 21 seasons of NFL experience.
Kromer and his wife, Emily, got married in 2018 and they have a son, Beckham.
