INGLEWOOD, Calif. – It took a clutch takeaway, but the Rams (1-0) found a way to hang on for a 14-9 win over the Texans (0-1) on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
As the Texans drove down the field late in the fourth quarter with a chance to score the go-ahead touchdown, inside linebacker Nate Landman knocked the ball loose from Texans running back Dare Ogunbowale, with defensive end Braden Fiske recovering with 1:51 remaining. From there, the Rams were able to drain the remaining clock, helped in part by a key 24-yard completion from quarterback Matthew Stafford to wide receiver Puka Nacua for a 24-yard gain on 3rd and 8.
Stafford became only the 10th quarterback in NFL history to reach 60,000 career passing yards after throwing for 245 against the Texans in the win.
Here is the complete game recap, presented by Corona:
The Texans struck first with a 51-yard field goal at the end of their second offensive series for a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Rams appeared positioned to respond with points of their own via a 74-yard kickoff return by Jordan Whittington on the change of possession, but that return was negated by a holding penalty. The ensuing series also saw a 34-yard completion to Whittington wiped out by a holding penalty.

That drive was part of a physical second quarter that saw wide receiver Puka Nacua (evaluated for a concussion), tight end Colby Parkinson (shoulder) and offensive lineman Steve Avila (ankle) exit the game due to injury. All were initially deemed questionable to return; Nacua and Parkinson returned later that same quarter, Avila not until 9:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. On the series Nacua and Parkinson returned, Nacua with just under two minutes left in the first half before turning again. That drive was punctuated by a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Kyren Williams on 4th and goal from the Texans 1 to give the Rams their first lead, 7-6, with 53 seconds to go in the first half.
Houston was able to use that remaining time in the first half to drill a 53-yard field goal just as time expired to take a 9-7 lead into halftime.
Los Angeles capitalized on the opening drive of second half with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to tight end Davis Allen to regain the lead 14-9. On the next defensive series, a second-down sack by defensive end Tyler Davis for a 12-yard loss, followed by a swipe of an interception near the sideline by cornerback Cobie Durant, regained possession for the Rams, but they were ultimately forced to punt after going 3-and-out on that series.
Driving into the Texans' redzone with under five minutes to play, an incomplete pass from Stafford to tight end Colby Parkinson was overturned after the Texans successfully challenged the ruling, which officials then overturned and ruled as the ball being caught and fumbled by Parkinson.
Still clinging to a 14-9 lead at that point, the Rams were in desperate need of a turnover, and Landman delivered with a forced fumble on Ogunbowale that the Rams recovered with 1:51 remaining. Williams' steady running and a 24-yard catch-and-run by Nacua helped the Rams ice the rest of the clock for the victory.
