Game Recap: Rams defeat Lions 41-34 to punch ticket to playoffs

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Thanks to a strong second half, the Rams (11-3) defeated the Lions 41-34 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for Los Angeles, its seventh in nine seasons under head coach Sean McVay.

Trailing 24-17 at halftime, the Rams outscored the Lions 24-10 in the second half, with complementary efforts on offense and defense helping them create enough separation from Detroit (8-6).

The Lions made things interesting after running back David Montgomery's one-yard touchdown run cut the Rams' lead to seven with 2:42 remaining, but the Rams drained enough of the remaining clock to secure the win. The Lions got the ball back with 23 seconds left, but no timeouts – not enough time to rally.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford finished 24 of 38 passing for 368 yards and two touchdowns – both to tight end Colby Parkinson – in the win, while wide receiver Puka Nacua set a new regular season career high with 181 receiving yards on nine receptions.

Here is the complete game recap, presented by Toyota:

After Lions kicker Jake Bates missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left on the opening drive, the Rams reached the Lions' 20 on the ensuing series before defensive end Aidan Hutchinson picked off a Stafford screen pass intended for tight end Colby Parkinson. Following the 58-yard interception return by Hutchinson, Lions took an 7-0 lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Goff to St. Brown the very next play with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Aided by a successful conversion on 4th and 4 near midfield, and later 4th and 8 from the Lions 37, the Rams answered on the following series with a four-yard touchdown run by running back Kyren Williams to tie the game 7-7 with 2:44 left in the first quarter.

Bates converted a 24-yard attempt on the next drive to regain the lead for Detroit 10-7 early in the second quarter. However, Los Angeles answered with a touchdown drive of their own again, this time via a one-yard touchdown run by Williams to give it its first lead 14-10 with 8:31 remaining in the second quarter.

A 52-yard catch-and-run by St. Brown following the kickoff immediately put the Lions in Rams territory. This time, the Lions reached the endzone via an eight-yard touchdown pass from Goff to St. Brown to regain the lead 17-14 with 6:12 to go in the first half.

Forced to punt near midfield, the Rams watched as Goff fired a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jameson Williams on the ensuing drive to increase their lead to 24-14 with 36 seconds left in the first half.

A 37-yard completion from Stafford to Nacua put the Rams in Lions territory on the following possession, allowing them to cut their deficit to seven with a 37-yard field goal by kicker Harrison Mevis just before halftime.

Mevis added a 44-yard field goal at the end of the opening drive of the second half to cut the Lions' lead to four. The Rams were forced to settle for it after Stafford mishandled the shotgun snap on third down and was forced to throw the ball away.

The Lions made their first punt on the game after an open-field tackle by cornerback Cobie Durant, and the Rams capitalized with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Parkinson, the call confirmed upon further review of whether Parkinson broke the plane, to regain the lead 27-24 with 2:26 left in the third quarter.

Another third-down stop – made possible by defensive end Kobie Turner sacking Goff for a loss of 10 yards on second down – paved the way for an 11-yard touchdown run by running back Blake Corum to extend the Rams' lead to 34-24 with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Nacua's 39-yard reception set up score.

The Lions added a 48-yard field goal by Bates with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Rams' lead to seven, but the Rams answered with a touchdown – an 11-yard pass from Stafford to Parkinson – to go up 41-27 with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter.

Detroit responded with a touchdown drive of their own – Montgomery's one-yard run – to cut L.A.'s lead back to a touchdown with 2:42 remaining. But the Rams erased enough of the remaining clock to secure the victory.
