Meet James

James MacRae is the Video Manager for the Rams. His superpower is troubleshooting — figuring out what's wrong, finding the cause, and fixing it fast. Whether it's lining up film with data, solving computer glitches, or staying a step ahead of technical issues, James is the one who makes sure coaches and players have what they need to succeed.

Path After High School

Right after graduating high school, James had the chance to help the video team at his hometown team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, during training camp. That first taste of working in pro sports stuck with him.

He studied engineering in college at the University of Virginia, but realized his heart wasn't in it. Instead of following that career path, he leaned on his early experiences and worked in the video department for multiple college teams. After graduation, he returned to the Jaguars for a full-season internship, turning what started as an exploration into something new into a pro sports STEAM career.

Career Curveball

After a year with the Jaguars, James accepted a full-time job back at the University of Virginia. At first, it was all football. But during the offseason, he tried freelance camera work for basketball. That small step opened doors into graphics, replay, and even directing live shows.

When the ACC Network launched, James suddenly found himself producing live broadcasts for TV. Even though he doesn't work in production now, those years gave him new skills and confidence. He learned how to pick things up quickly, adapt to new technology, and thrive outside his comfort zone.

STEAM in Action

Technology: Cameras, computers, and video software are at the heart of James's work. He keeps everything in this world that the coaches and players depend on running smoothly.

Engineering: Troubleshooting is like engineering detective work. James has to figure out how all the parts connect, test possibilities, and find solutions.

Art: Film and video are all about telling a story. James helps make sure the story of every game and practice is clear for players and coaches.

Behind the Scenes

When people hear "video," in James' job title, they imagine him behind a camera filming highlight reels. The truth? Much of his time is spent solving computer and software issues for coaches. His job is less about flashy clips and more about keeping one of the team's key tech backbones working.

The Best Part of James's Job

For James, it's the people. Working with a diverse, talented staff and building friendships beyond the facility gives his work meaning. The teamwork and camaraderie make the long hours worth it.

James's Advice for Students

Treat other people the right way first and believe in yourself second. Positive attitudes are infectious and can leave a lasting impression. Even if opportunities don't come right away, the relationships you build along the way matter most.
