Game Recap: Matthew Stafford's four touchdown passes, timely turnovers created by defense lift Rams to 42-26 road win over 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Behind a franchise record-setting and historic performance by quarterback Matthew Stafford and timely turnovers created by their defense, the Rams (7-2) defeated the 49ers 42-26 on Sunday at Levi's Stadium.

The victory over San Francisco (6-4) extended Los Angeles' win streak to four games.

Stafford finished 24 of 36 for 280 yards and four touchdowns, became the first QB in franchise history to throw 4-plus touchdown passes in three straight regular season games, and also became the 7th QB in NFL history to accomplish the feat, joining Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes and Drew Brees.

Wide receiver Davante Adams had six receptions for 77 yards and one touchdown in the win; his receiving touchdown broke a tie with Tony Gonzalez for 8th-most all time. Wide receiver Puka Nacua added five catches for 64 yards and one touchdown as Stafford completed passes to eight different receivers.

On defense, inside linebacker Nate Landman recorded his third forced fumble of the season, and cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. posted his second-straight game with an interception. Both set up touchdown-scoring drives by L.A's offense.

Here is the complete game recap, presented by Amazon Music:

The Rams took an early 7-0 lead via a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Kyren Williams at the end of an efficient opening drive.

After Los Angeles' defense pitched a 3-and-out, its offense repaid the favor with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to wide receiver Puka Nacua to extend its lead to 14-0 with 5:34 left in the first quarter.

The Rams defense caused another change of possession after Landman's punch-out fumble was recovered by Kamren Kinchens, giving the offense possession from their own 41. Their offense capitalized with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to tight end Davis Allen to make it 21-0 Rams early in the second quarter.

The Rams' defense again caused another change of possession after outside linebacker Byron Young stopped running back Christian McCaffrey for no gain on 4th and 1 from the Rams' 11 yard line. However, Los Angeles' offense went 3-and-out on the ensuing possession.

A 27-yard return by the 49ers on that punt set them up at the Rams 36, and they capitalized on that field position with a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mac Jones to wide receiver Jauan Jennings to cut the Rams' lead to 14 with 3:15 left in the first half.

Receiving the second half-opening kickoff, the 49ers mounted a scouting drive that erased nearly six minutes and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Brian Robinson Jr. to cut the Rams' lead to 21-14 with 9:33 left in the third quarter.

The Rams answered with a clock-eating scoring drive of their own, as a 2-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Adams ended a near-7-minute drive and gave them a 28-14 lead with 2:39 left in the third quarter.

The 49ers responded with a scoring drive, as Jones' 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end Luke Farrell cut the Rams' lead to 28-20 early in the fourth quarter; Rams outside linebacker Jared Verse blocked the extra point attempt.

Williams' 7-yard touchdown run on the next possession made a two-possession lead for the Rams once again, putting them up 35-20 with 10:04 to play in the fourth quarter.

Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. tipped a Jones pass intended for running back Christian McCaffrey back to himself to corral an interception with 8:29 remaining, setting the Rams up at the 49ers 38. Again L.A.'s offense capitalized, this time via a 16-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to tight end Colby Parkinson for Stafford's fourth passing touchdown of the game.

San Francisco added a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jones to tight end George Kittle on the following possession, but the ensuing 2-point attempt failed as Jones' pass intended for Jennings was intercepted. Either way, it was too little, too late for the 49ers.
