'How can I add some of these things to my toolbox?': Puka Nacua continuing to learn as much as he can from Davante Adams

LOS ANGELES – For most of the offseason workout program, it was Puka Nacua as the line leader for the Rams wide receivers' individual drills – even when Davante Adams was also there as a participant.

However, when players took the field for the first practice of Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union, it was Adams who was the first to go in the those drills.

At Nacua's insistence.

"I think veteran leadership," Nacua said, when asked about the growth of the position group with the addition of Adams. "I've asked Davante to lead our position group, to lead our position group drills. There is a respect for him to come in saying, 'I don't want to push you out of the way or to try to take your spot,' and (not) be like, 'Oh, I should be up there number one.' But it's something that I have a huge amount of respect for his game and I'm blessed to be around great people like 'Coop' (former Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp) and to have Davante come in. So also, when I was in the front, I'm trying to sprint as fast as I can so I can turn around and watch him. So, I was like, 'Hey, I think it'll make my job a little bit easier if you just go first.' Today I was right there in the back and I'm just standing like this because I'm going to watch the tape again, but I'm like, there's nothing better than seeing him with my own two eyes."

Whether at the front of the line or not, Nacua has already absorbed tons of knowledge from Adams, just like he did his first two seasons working alongside Kupp.

Adams' release at the line of scrimmage still remains among the best in the NFL, but Nacua said Adams' illusion of speed and lateral quickness is something he's trying to tailor to himself in a way that fits his skillset. Nacua also pointed to Adams' body control and elusiveness at the line of scrimmage, as well as his awareness of the rotation of defenders and how to attack leverage on any route.

"Not just specifically the quick game, everything down the field and to be able to have the illusion of going the opposite direction, where you're going where you want to go," Nacua said. "He does it great and he explains it so well in the meeting room. So it makes it fun to watch tape and to be like, 'Okay, how can I add some of these things to my toolbox?'"

Already with 184 receptions for 2,476 receiving yards and nine touchdowns for his first two seasons, Nacua can only benefit from the addition of those tools.

"It's fun to be out here and, man, that guy, number 17 is really good at football," Nacua said.
