From the Podium: Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford on Week 3 loss vs. Eagles

PHILADELPHIA – The Rams lost in heartbreaking fashion in Week 3 of the 2025 season. With two seconds remaining and the Rams down 26-27, the would-be game-winning field goal from kicker Joshua Karty was blocked and returned for a touchdown. It was the second blocked field goal of the fourth quarter.

After the game, head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford spoke with the media. Here are the most significant quotes and talking points from those press conferences.

"Ultimately, not being able to finish in the red area, we weren't good enough on third downs, some uncharacteristic things that we could execute on. And then credit to them, they ended up making some plays, they got back in it." - McVay

After the last-second loss, McVay said it was "a disappointed locker room, but it's a locker room that's going to respond." They have to bounce-back and turn their focus to next week's game so that they don't let the Eagles don't beat them twice by dwelling on their mistakes.

"When you do have a loss like this, I want to see what we're about," McVay said. "And I know what we're about. I know we're going to respond. Can't let the Eagles beat us twice."

"The reality is, we gotta execute better (on those field goals). Credit to them, they made the plays, I'm not going to make any excuses." - McVay

Both field goal tries that could have won L.A. the game in the fourth quarter were blocked by interior defensive linemen. McVay reiterated that they "could have really opened that game up" if they had executed better in the red zone, and then some of those field goals wouldn't have been necessary.

When asked if he felt like they left points on the board, he said "Oh yeah, absolutely."

"There's so many plays throughout the game that can affect it. Obviously, you don't want to start the game with a turnover like I did. I think, just like I said, (there were) some physical throws that I would love to have back." - Stafford

The Eagles' only score of the first half came off Stafford's interception on the Rams' first drive of the game. After that, the Rams' defense held them at bay until the third quarter. Stafford said that he can "do better" early on in the game and on third downs.

"The scoreboard doesn't really matter until the end of the game," Stafford said. And that was especially true on Sunday. He added that they will learn from it and Stafford looks at himself first in that regard, saying he was "disappointed" in some of his throws.

"Had our chances, really in all phases probably, to win that one and didn't get it done, which is frustrating." - Stafford

While Stafford has "no concerns" about how the team will respond to this loss, he said they need to go back and look at the tape to make sure those mistakes that caused it don't happen again. The team has "a bunch of guys that care about each other, care about doing the stuff the right way," and understand the process they have to go through to fix those mistakes.
