WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Rams head coach Sean McVay on Monday confirmed rookie Ty Simpson is "definitely" going to play in Thursday night's preseason finale against the Chargers at SoFi Stadium (7 p.m. PT, KCBS), but is still undecided on whether Stetson Bennett IV will play and what the team's overall quarterback usage will look like.

Part of the reason McVay doesn't know what those reps will look like in their final preseason game, or how he will allocate them, is because of how circumstantially different this year's preseason is compared to last year's.

Last summer, the Rams had their backup role settled with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo in that spot. Additionally, Bennett had already played a lot by the time the 2025 preseason finale arrived, having started each of their first two preseason games and played 100% of the snaps in the first game and 91% in the second, so Dresser Winn started and got all of the snaps in the third game. McVay said he'd like to be able to get undrafted free agent Matthew Caldwell, who has yet to play in a preseason game, an opportunity to play.

"There is no doubt about it, that in some form or fashion – I'm not minimizing that Stetson needs to work, so does Ty," McVay said. "Last year was more of a reflection of Stetson had played so much, Jimmy wasn't even playing in the preseason, and you wanted to give Dresser an opportunity. I would like to be able to figure out a way to give Caldwell an opportunity to play, no question. But is it going to be something similar to last year? This is a different year, and so it'll probably be a little bit different approach."

McVay also said he has not yet decided which quarterback between Bennett and Simpson will back up starter Matthew Stafford.
