'Always fun to contribute': Max Klare makes most of preseason debut, raising floor of already-deep TE group

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Max Klare had a busy preseason debut.

Active as a blocker and pass-catcher, the rookie tight end out of Ohio State made the most of his opportunities with seven catches on a team-high eight targets for 37 yards in the Rams' 20-12 road win last Saturday at the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Yeah, it's obviously always fun to contribute," Klare told therams.com. "(Quarterback) Ty (Simpson) did a great job finding the open guy, which they fell off on me a couple times, which made it easy. But yeah, it's just a continual process of stacking days and getting better."

Klare brought in three of those receptions — all on the same drive toward the end of the first half — within a string of eight consecutive completions for Simpson.

The extended reps for Klare have come with veteran tight end Davis Allen sidelined by a quad injury for most of training camp, and Allen is expected to return to practice soon. Still, Klare's showing was a positive sign in reinforcing the depth Los Angeles has at the position.

"I thought he did well," head coach Sean McVay said after Tuesday's practice. "He made the catches with the targets that were there. I thought he did a nice job getting his hands inside in the run game, some different defensive structures and techniques that we haven't really seen from our defense just based on the front mechanics that Kansas City was playing. I thought he took a really good step in the right direction, and he's been the guy that has really benefited the most from reps that he wouldn't have gotten otherwise in Davis' absence. The level of play from that group as a whole has raised his play. I've mentioned (TE Coach) 'Scooter' (Scott Huff) does such a great job, but you've got 'Higs' (tight end Tyler Higbee), you've got (tight end) Colby (Parkinson), (tight end) Terrance Ferguson is doing a great job for us and Max has gotten a lot of quality reps with that first group."

"It's an extremely special group," Klare said of the tight end room. "First of all, a lot of really talented players, and it's fun to sit in there and watch what they do well and pick things up from each guy. Obviously Colby and Higbee have been doing it for a long time, so getting to learn from those guys is all you can ask for as a rookie."

Regardless of his snap count or involvement, the goal for Klare still remains bringing consistency each day, a mindset he will carry with him into Saturday's preseason game against the Saints at SoFi Stadium.

"Just being consistent is the main thing," Klare said of his mindset the rest of camp and the preseason. "You just want to consistently stack good days. That's what we're asked to do, and that's what we want to go do every day."
