Game Recap: Rams fall to Eagles 33-26

PHILADELPHIA – Despite a strong first half, the second half did not go the Rams way as they fell to the Eagles 33-26 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Trailing 27-26 with 1:48 to go in the fourth quarter after Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a go-ahead, 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Devonta Smith, Los Angeles (2-1) kept its poise on the ensuing drive to set up a potential game-winning, 44-yard field goal attempt by kicker Joshua Karty. Instead, Karty's kicked was blocked for a second time, and in his instance returned for a touchdown to seal the result.

Both of the blocked kicks by the Eagles (3-0) came in the fourth quarter. Up until that point, Karty had made his first four field goals from 51, 28, 33 and 46 yards, as well as both of his extra point attempts.

Los Angeles' defense held Philadelphia to just 33 total net yards of offense in the first half, including -1 passing yards. Neither team had a third-down conversion until midway through the third quarter. The second half was a different story for the Eagles, who had 255 total yards across the third and fourth quarter. The Eagles outscored the Rams 26-7 in the second half.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford with his performance passed Matt Ryan for ninth all-time in NFL history in passing touchdowns. He also reached 100 passing touchdowns with the Rams, becoming the fourth player in history with 15,000-plus passing yards and 100-plus passing touchdowns with multiple teams, joining Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer and Jared Goff. He finished 19 of 33 overall for 196 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.

Here is the complete game recap:

The Rams' opening drive was cut short as Stafford's third pass attempt – intended for wide receiver Davante Adams – was intercepted by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. Taking over at the Los Angeles 38, Philadelphia capitalized on the takeaway with a 1-yard touchdown run by Hurts for an early 7-0 lead.

Kicker Josh Karty answered for the Rams with a 51-yard field goal a little over four minutes later to cut the deficit to 7-3.

After defensive tackle Poona Ford notched his first sack as a Ram to force the Eagles to punt, the Rams took their first lead on the ensuing series via a 44-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Adams to make it 10-7 Rams with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

A second-consecutive 3-and-out pitched by L.A.'s defense gave the ball back to its offense, which then extended the lead to 13-7 on a 28-yard field goal by Karty. The drive almost ended in a touchdown, but a holding penalty against Los Angeles in the endzone moved them backward, and after Stafford's incomplete pass to Tyler Higbee, forced them to settle for the field goal.

A third-straight 3-and-out again translated to points for the offense, as Karty drilled a 33-yard field goal to push the Rams' lead to 16-7 with 3:43 left in the first half.

The Rams made it four-straight 3-and-outs, again getting points out of it with a 46-yard field goal by Karty to extend their lead to 19-7 with 10 seconds left before halftime.

On the opening drive of the second half, a Jared Verse strip-sack recovered by inside linebacker Nate Landman at the Eagles 10 set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to running back Kyren Williams to make it 26-7 Rams.

Philadelphia used a slew of explosive completions to cut into the lead on the following possession, as Hurts connected with tight end Dallas Goedert for a 33-yard touchdown pass to reduce Los Angeles' lead to 12 with 11:38 left in the third quarter.

A 9-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to Brown reduced the Rams' lead to just five with 2:16 left in the third quarter.

Clinging to that 26-21 lead early in the fourth quarter, L.A. went for it on 4th and 1 from the Philadelphia 46 but were unsuccessful. On the following drive, the Eagles went for it on 4th and 6 from the Rams 49, but were unsuccessful after Hurts' pass intended for Brown was broken up by safety Kamren Kinchens.

Karty's blocked 36-yard field goal attempt on the drive after the Eagles' turnover on downs gave Philadelphia the ball back with 8:42 remaining. Despite a taunting penalty after the block starting the ensuing drive at the Eagles' own 9-yard line, they mounted a 17-play, 91-yard scoring drive capped by the go-ahead touchdown pass from Hurts to Smith that erased nearly seven minutes off the clock. The ensuing 2-point try, however, was unsuccessful, leaving the Rams trailing 27-26 with 1:48 to play.

The second blocked field goal attempt clinched the result.
