'You could tell it meant a lot to the community': Josh Karty hosts free youth football camp at alma mater Western Alamance High School in North Carolina

Joshua Karty made sure part of his offseason included giving back to his roots.

The Rams kicker on April 12 hosted the Karty Party Free Football Camp at his alma mater Western Alamance High School in Elon, North Carolina.

"It was fun," Karty told theRams.com. "You could tell it meant a lot to the community. It meant a lot to me and my coaches and family as well, just to be able to help give back to the program that gave me so much opportunity to help me get to where I am today."

The clinic featured two sessions and was open to grades 1-12 from schools in Alamance County. About 160 youth participated, according to Karty, receiving instruction for all types of football drills and also a t-shirt and light lunch. They also had the opportunity to win prizes, and Karty signed autographs afterward.

While Karty focused on the kicking drills, staff alumni and current players from the Western Alamance football program aided in overseeing the drills spread out across the field.

"I ran pretty much the kicking station, and it was a whole football camp," Karty said. "I have to be honest, I don't know how to coach the kids on lineman drills or receiver drills, so left that to all the other high school coaches who helped me out. And then at the end, we kind of did some competitions and stuff for the kids and gave away a little bit of prizes and stuff. So that was a lot of fun."

Karty also entertained camp participants with some field goal attempts for fun.

"Just tried to give the kids a little bit of what they showed up for, give them a little glimpse of what it's like to kick a real field goal at the NFL level," Karty said. "So that was fun, it was just going back as far as, pretty much as far as I could comfortably. I was kind of not super warmed up fully, just kind of inched back a little bit. But yeah, I ended up knocking through four kicks over 60 (yards). The kids were going a little bit crazy, so that was fun."

Karty said the plan is to make the camp an annual offseason commitment.

"I mean pretty much as long as my name carries any weight in my community back home," Karty said. "As long as I'm in the NFL having a career, I plan to go home every year and do that."
