Rams' 'Mauicamp' experience also includes giving back to Hawaiian island community with girls flag football clinic, rookies joining joining Habitat for Humanity Maui rebuild in Lahaina

WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Rams' time in Maui is about more than just practices, spending time with family and loved ones and various activities on the island.

Led by the Rams football development team, players and coaches joined in taking time to support the island community by hosting a girls flag football clinic and boys tackle football clinic for nearly 250 athletes from high schools on the island Tuesday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.

"I think it's something that we all can relate to, being able to understand and have that empathy of like, this is a similar situation to what we were in (in Los Angeles)," wide receiver Puka Nacua said. "I wasn't directly impacted by the fires, but to know of the support that you want to give to those people who are going through that issue, and to see how it can change and bring a community closer together in that time. And I think our team has felt that. To be able to come back and give back to these kids and see a smile on their face and to help make sure they have a good time is something that I always want to be a part of."

"It means a lot (to be here)," head coach Sean McVay said. "I think there's a lot of understanding, just based on some of the things that the L.A. community went through, and so there's a lot of empathy, there's a lot of understanding. And our players, what's so great about the group of men that we have in our locker room is they understand this platform that they're blessed with, to be able to give back. And all these guys they remember when they were in these chairs and they were in these positions, and being able to meet some of their heroes, and so I think they understand to bring the right vibe, the energy, but that's authentic to who these guys are. And I just feel really grateful to be a small part and to be around them, because they're the type of group that makes you want to be better and not let them down. And it'll be a great opportunity for us to be able to give back to the Maui community."

Also after practice, the Rams joined the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hollman Lockers and design firm Forty Nine Degrees to announce the building of new professional-grade girls and boys locker rooms for student-athletes at Lahainaluna High School in Lahaina, Maui, which franchise legend Andrew Whitworth announced. Whitworth said those will be "a pro-style locker room" authentically capturing the team's culture and atmosphere.

"Inspirationally, we hope these young people feel this love, they feel special, they feel how much they mean to us," Whitworth said. "And in a time of loss, a time when you had a setback, that we're going to rally around you. No different than on a football team when we face adversity, life's the same way. That's why I love sports, because it teaches us a lot of things. You got to rally together and find a way to help each other get through the time you're going through. And so this is a great opportunity as an organization for us to partner with some great partners and do something special for these young people."

Rookies traveled to Lahaina to join Habitat for Humanity Maui on Tuesday afternoon as well to help rebuild four homes in an area affected by the 2023 Hawaii wildfires – the two-year anniversary of which is approaching in early August. That 23-member rookie class worked alongside other volunteers to complete active construction including painting, framing and more.

It was bookend-like symmetry for that group, having begun their community engagement doing a distribution with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles for L.A. wildfire survivors at SoFi Stadium.

McVay said that, as an organization, there is a role and responsibility that they have to give back.

"This is a blessing to be in these positions, and you want to be able to find authentic opportunities to be able to partner up with people or situations where our players can really make a cool impact," McVay said. "And so this represented that. Sometimes they end up presenting themselves, and I thought this was a really cool thing, and it's also a great chance for us to be in a beautiful setting. A lot of smiles and a lot of good laughs that have gone on in the last day since we've been here, and so hopefully that'll continue all the way through Thursday."
