Feature: 'Not thinking twice about that at all': Matthew Stafford puts attention toward Texans, not back injury as Rams prepare for Week 1

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's sole focus is on Sunday's Week 1 game against the Texans and whatever physicality may come with it, not the aggravated disc in his back that sidelined him for most of training camp and the preseason.

"Oh, I'm gonna go play the game," Stafford said prior to Wednesday's practice. "Whatever happens, happens. I'm playing like I always play. I got no issues with a physical game. Obviously would love to stay as clean as possible, but I'm not thinking twice about that at all. I'm out there ready to go play."

Stafford, who is expected to start and be a full participant in practice this week, was not listed on the first injury report of the week released Wednesday afternoon. He has been at that participation level in every practice so far since returning to practice on Aug. 18.

Even while sidelined, he still managed to build chemistry with one of his new targets in wide receiver Davante Adams. Even when Stafford was in the back and working away from the practice field during training camp, Adams said the quarterback was "watching some of my routes, being able to tell me, 'Here I think you could do this,' or 'I like how you did that and maybe I'll adjust based off what you're doing.'"

"Every time we're stepping out on the grass together, we're getting better," Stafford said. "I'm learning him. He's learning me. We're talking about what we want to do on certain plays. All the time that we've had on the grass and frankly off the grass has been valuable time. He's a smart guy. He's been around for a long time. He's played the game at a high level for a long time. The conversations that we have are smart. They're on the point and we're moving on and it's been great to work with him. So far, I've had a blast and can't wait to get out there and play on Sunday."

Heading into his 17th season, Stafford enters Week 1 needing 191 passing yards to reach 60,000 for his career, a feat only nine other quarterbacks in NFL history have achieved to this point.

"(I) feel good," Stafford said. "Feel ready to go."
