WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Rams head coach Sean McVay on Monday indicated he's unsure whether offensive lineman Steve Avila (ankle) will play Thursday night against the 49ers (5:15 p.m. PT, Amazon Prime Video).
"We'll see," McVay said. "Not sure about that yet, but he's doing a great job. He's doing everything that we've asked. I think he had a really good week last week, getting himself back rolling. And so, love Steve, looking forward to it. The Thursday games are interesting, so we'll see where we're at."
Avila progressed from limited participation in practice last Wednesday and Thursday to full participation last Friday. Although he did not carry a designation entering Sunday's game against the Colts, offensive lineman Justin Dedich ended up starting in his place at left guard for the third-straight game.
McVay said postgame that the decision to start Dedich was because Avila was still working through recovering from the ankle sprain he sustained in Week 1 against the Texans. Dedich played all 75 offensive snaps, while Avila ended up playing just five special teams snaps in Los Angeles' 27-20 comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts yesterday.
"I think it's just how he feels," McVay said, when asked if Avila still has any checkpoints to hit in his rehab process. "And I think part of that is his communication to us, talking with (vice president of sports medicine and performance) Reggie (Scott), and then the evaluation of what he looks like relative to being able to go and be the Steve that we know, and that's been a really good player for us the last few years."
Beyond that, McVay indicated the Rams came out clean initially injury-wise from yesterday's game against the Colts and that his initial talks on that front with Scott were positive, but also noted it was still early and that guys were still making there way into the facility as of 9 a.m. Monday.
