If you thought of it as a foregone conclusion, you were probably right — especially after the success over the last two years.

But the Rams have exercised the option on quarterback Jared Goff's rookie deal, keeping him under contract in Los Angeles through the 2020 season.

Last year, the Rams took a similar approach to exercising the fifth-year options on both running back Todd Gurley and cornerback Marcus Peters — formalizing the announcement at the team's pre-draft press conference. So in keeping with tradition, general manger Les Snead started out Tuesday's presser with the news on the team's No. 1 overall pick from 2016.

"A few years ago, we moved up to get him. I can say that three years later, him helping us win two divisions, win a conference championship, we probably would have given an extra pick — don't tell the Titans that — if we had known that was going to occur," general manager Les Snead said. "So, we definitely look forward to working with Jared and continue chasing and earning that type of success in the future."

"Couldn't be more excited about having Jared as our quarterback. The biggest thing is, [we] just want to make sure that there's clarity on how great we feel about him leading our team for many years to come," head coach Sean McVay said. "Jared is one of the instrumental leaders and you just watch the way that it has occurred naturally. I think one of the best things that's an indicator of what a special guy this is, is when you look at the way that his teammates in college responded to when he was drafted No. 1 overall. There's a lot of times that his teammates here have those same types of reactions when they see him succeed and they see him take accountability for things that haven't worked out."

"This is a guy that is the ultimate leader," McVay added. "As he continues to accumulate experience, we feel so good about our quarterback position with him leading the way. This is a big-time deal to be able to know that we're going to have him for that fifth year and many years to come after that."

While Goff has thrown for 9,581 yards, 65 touchdowns, and completed 62.1 percent of his passes throughout his three-year career, the quarterback has undoubtedly significantly improved under McVay. In the last two seasons alone, Goff has compiled a 24-7 regular-season record as a starter — plus two playoff victories — while completing 63.6 percent of his passes with 60 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. His passer rating stands at 100.8 over that span, and he's averaged 8.2 yards per attempt and 12.9 yards per completion.

As McVay and Goff head into their third year together, the head coach sees his partnership with the 24-year-old QB continuing to progress.

"I think it really provides a rare opportunity for myself as he and I are really growing together," McVay said. "He's going into his fourth year, we're going into our third year working together. I couldn't be more excited and I know our staff feels that way.
