Feature: Jared Verse and Kobie Turner lead defensive performance fit for a celebration of Aaron Donald

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Outside linebacker Jared Verse knew the magnitude of a game that would be celebrating legendary Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald.

"Let's put show on for him," he said this past Thursday, when asked whether the defensive line has any extra motivation for Sunday Night Football against the Buccaneers given those circumstances.

Safe to say Verse – and defensive end Kobie Turner – stayed true to his word.

Verse and Turner finished with two sacks each, highlighting a dominant performance by the pass rush in L.A.'s 34-7 win over Tampa Bay Sunday night at SoFi Stadium.

"I feel like we definitely did (put on a show for him)," Verse said postgame. "I feel like we left a lot of plays on the field. B.Y.'s sack that got called back, we gotta be better on the back end, but on the front end, I'm not gonna hold myself irresponsible either. There was a couple sacks I had (that) I could enter the game with probably about four or five if I just did my job. So we all gotta be better."

Regret over missed opportunities aside, the Rams' defensive front still wreaked havoc all night.

Verse and Turner accounted for all four of the team's sacks and four of six quarterback hits; the pressure generated by that group helped a secondary that came up with 10 passes defensed and two interceptions – one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Verse's first sack dropped Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield for a loss of three years on third and long; cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. snagged his third interception in four games on Mayfield's ensuing 4th-and-24 hail mary attempt from the Bucs' own 37 at the end of the first half.

Verse's second sack brought down backup Teddy Bridgewater, who had replaced an injured Mayfield, for a loss of 12 yards on 4th-and-3 from the Rams' 13 with 9:37 to play in the fourth quarter, eliminating the last real threat Tampa Bay had to score any points.

Meanwhile, Turner's first sack came on third down and preceded the touchdown-scoring drive by the offense that extended L.A.'s lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter. Similar to Verse's second sack, Turner's came in the third quarter on a 4th-and-9 from the Rams' 18 that stalled the Bucs' other best chance of cutting further into the Rams' lead in the second half.

"I mean, we were really able to get after the passer," Turner said. "I thought that there were some opportunities last week that we got after him a little bit, but where we really needed to finish a little bit stronger, and he (Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold) was able to get the ball out a little faster, too. Today, he (Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield) held on to the ball a little bit more, and when that happens, the rush has to come alive. So cannot be prouder of our front. I can't have two sacks unless the rest of the guys are doing their job. We can't have the individual success that we have, unless the rest of the team is doing it."

Turner and Verse know well the standard Donald has set for that group, which is why it was no surprise that, even as well as the unit played, Verse knew exactly what Donald – even as much as he celebrated their big plays – might tell him postgame if he reaches out.

And still be forgiving also.

"I feel like he gonna tell me, 'You gotta make the rest of the plays,'" Verse said. "He gonna tell me straight out, like, 'You had a couple more that you could have had if you just held it down a little bit more. But I think he'll give me my grace, too."
