Free Agent Spotlight: Kam Curl brought versatility, playmaking to Rams' defense during career year in 2025

Safety Kam Curl was a staple of the Rams' defense in 2025.

His 122 total tackles ranked second among all defensive backs, and he added two interceptions, five passes defended and a forced fumble during the regular season. In the playoffs, he added a league-leading 27 total tackles, one interception and two passes defended. He even took on a larger leadership role during safety Quentin Lake's absence due to injury, which included pep-talk duties.

"He's a quieter guy, but I think he's a guy that, when he talks, people are listening," said defensive coordinator Chris Shula. "He has the respect of the whole defense and it starts with his play on the field, his play in practice and his preparation."

Shula moved Curl around the formation frequently. 58.6% of his snaps came at free safety, but his physicality and nose for the football served Curl well in the box (26.3%) and the slot (10.3%), according to Pro Football Focus.

Now, Curl is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when the two-year deal he signed ahead of the 2024 season expires on March 11 this year. As he and other players cleared out their lockers the day after the Rams' loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, Curl made his priorities clear.

The Rams' success during Curl's two seasons in Los Angeles, along with his personal growth and contributions, have made him want to stay with the team.

"I would love to be back here," Curl said on Monday. "This is a great organization, a winning organization. I would love to be back for sure."

Los Angeles has not extended defensive backs often in recent years, but they made an exception for Lake. Will they do it again for Curl?
