Feature: Blake Corum and Kyren Williams produce extremely efficient run game despite loss to Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite the loss, Los Angeles' running back tandem of Blake Corum and Kyren Williams "kept pounding" the Carolina defense on Sunday.

The highlight came on the Rams' first offensive play of the fourth quarter when Corum hit a hole into the second level, made a jump cut toward the right sideline and then put on a burst of speed. The play went for 34 yards, the longest of his career, and set the Rams up in Carolina territory for their first scoring drive of the second half. Wide receiver Jordan Whittington threw a huge block after Corum cut his way to help clear a path down the field.

"I just told him good stuff, good stuff for pressing, good stuff for finding that backside cut," Williams said. "And shout out to J-Witt for getting that block started, that really (accelerated) him down the field."

Five plays later Williams punched it in the end zone from seven yards out to give the Rams a 28-24 lead.

The Rams' running backs combined for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries (7.7 yards per attempt), but it wasn't enough to get a victory, as L.A. fell 28-31 against Carolina in Week 13.

Corum ran for a career-high 81 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries, averaging a whopping 11.6 yards per attempt. He's one of six backs this season to average at least that many yards per attempt on seven or more carries, according to Next Gen Stats. Meanwhile, Williams took 13 carries for 72 yards and a score. Neither was tackled behind the line of scrimmage.

Corum said that the Rams switched between running duo and outside zone throughout the game, and both were effective. The offensive line, tight ends and wide receivers all worked "as one" to give Corum and Williams holes to hit throughout the game.

"I just think we were pressing our spots, hitting our holes, and when they were there, taking advantage of it," Williams said.

Corum kept his legs churning to punch in a two-yard score near the end of the first half, which gave the Rams a 21-17 lead heading into the break. It was his second touchdown of the season and first since Week 2.

Williams exited the game with an ankle injury during the second quarter, but ultimately reentered the game and said he'll be "ready to go next week." He added that he had scar tissue on that ankle from an injury he suffered last season, so it wasn't as severe as it could have been.

As a team captain, his message to the team was simple: "Just keep working. We know who we are. We know what we're about. We know that the type of people we got in this locker room, we'll be okay with."
