5 players to watch: Rams vs Cowboys, 2025 Preseason Week 1

The Rams' 2025 preseason schedule begins with a home game against the Cowboys at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. pacific time on Rams affiliate ABC7.

Here are five players fans should be watching during the contest:

All reports indicate that rookie wide receiver Konata Mumpfield will command the attention of the fans and the defense on Saturday. Everyone from head coach Sean McVay to wide receiver Davante Adams has been impressed with the seventh-round pick out of Pittsburgh. His understanding of leverage and body control led to elite separation on routes and several impressive catches throughout training camp.

Last year, then-rookie wide receiver Jordan Whittington stole the show in game one of the preseason against Dallas, catching six passes for 74 yards, and then proceeded to contribute at the position during the regular season. Mumpfield, a late-round rookie receiver just like Whittington was, has drawn similar praise.

Running back Jarquez Hunter will get an opportunity to show what he can add to the running back room on Saturday. Boasting a 4.44-second 40-yard dash time and coming off a college season at Auburn where 48.0% of his rushing yards came on breakaway runs (15-plus yards), fans and coaches will be looking to get a glimpse of Hunter's speed in a game setting. His compact frame (5-foot-9, 204 pounds) provides great contact balance along with that burst.

"He's heavy. He's got a great body lean," McVay said during training camp. "Even though we're not truly tackling, you can feel that he is heavy through the hole."

Chris "Pooh" Paul Jr. is another 2025 draftee that fans should be watching on Saturday. Paul is the first inside linebacker drafted by the Rams since they spent a third-round pick on Ernest Jones IV in 2021. He was held out of much of training camp due to a calf injury, so this Saturday's preseason showdown will be an opportunity to show what he can bring to the defense.

Third-year quarterback Stetson Bennett IV will start the preseason opener for the second-straight season. After missing the entirety of his rookie year, Bennett had an up-and-down performance in two preseason games last year. He feels much more confident operating the offense ahead of this season, however, and McVay has noticed considerable improvement.

"(I have) more confidence in what my guys are going to do, what I'm going to do, the way the offense is run," Bennett said.

Outside linebacker Josaiah Stewart was the Rams' second pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. After an extremely productive seasons at Michigan last year (8.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss in 11 games), Stewart enters an outside linebacker room that lost a rotational player, Michael Hoecht, in free agency. Saturday will be an opportunity for Stewart to prove himself worthy of potentially earning some snaps in the regular season.
